Since I have several types of arthritis plus migraines, I've always used an "as opposed to what?" thought process. That doesn't work in a doctor's office with numbers or even faces. Just nice to share the, um, pain.
CarolCarol Bradley Bursackhttp://www.mindingourelders.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12707009.post-9001741440376748082016-01-30T15:42:18.761-05:002016-01-30T15:42:18.761-05:00Here is a pain scale which might be similar to wha...Here is a pain scale which might be similar to what you saw at St. Mike's:

https://www.cedars-sinai.edu/Patients/Programs-and-Services/Pediatric-Surgery/Patient-Guide/Pain-Function-Assessment.pdf

Cindyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12808160376479302563noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12707009.post-88263341716632554492012-07-24T14:57:54.195-04:002012-07-24T14:57:54.195-04:00I don't live with chronic pain and have always...I don't live with chronic pain and have always found the pain scale useless. If I had NO pain, why am I seeing a doctor or going to the hospital FOR PAIN? And if 10 is the worst pain I've ever felt, I'm not sure what that is. It's bad enough that I left my home and came to the hospital. Does that make it a 6 or a 10? Worst pain compared to what -- Giving birth or getting shot? My husband has sickle cell disease and the pain he calls 7 I would call 21! I like the functionality scale, as you suggested (and Hyperbole and a Half has the right idea!).Joy Bnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12707009.post-28126306783202460202012-07-24T13:12:52.325-04:002012-07-24T13:12:52.325-04:00Insightful post, Lene. Recently when I had episodes of chest pain, I told my cardiologist that it wasn't "fall-down grasping my chest" pain, but it was "wouldn't want to have to get up and walk" pain.I think the impact on your life is the only one that will ever be accurate for everybody.Lyn Burnstinenoreply@blogger.com
