My boyfriend currently has a tracheostomy aft...Hi! My boyfriend currently has a tracheostomy after a horrible car accident about 6 weeks ago when he broke a bunch of ribs and had a collapsed lung (among other injuries). He was intubated for about 3 weeks before the trach was inserted. He is finally out of CCU/ICU and has been for a couple of weeks but they are having one heck of a time weaning him off of the trach. Getting over this hurdle will be HUGE in his recovery as he has other injuries that need healing/physical therapy as well. I feel like he is receiving good care at the long term acute care facility he is in now, but it's hard to get info that I can understand! He is fully conscious and aware now, but gets very anxious when he has too many secretions because it makes him feel like he can't breathe even though his oxygen levels are fine (with the ventilator). He panics, and they give him Ativan for anxiety and that really does help. They say he has LOTS of lung gunk (as you say) and I have been scouring the internet for ways to help him. From what you wrote it looks like he should cough as much as possible? I would so love any helpful tips from you that I could pass along. I'm looking for things HE can do to help himself get off the ventilator. I could give you my email if that would be best. So much great info in your blog! Unfortunately he doesn't quite have the sense of humour back that you do, but the descriptions are really helpful to someone who doesn't know anything about this. Thank you for your amazing practicality and great spirit! She passed when I was still new at being a lupus patient, so, it's been awhile. But I remember her putting her finger on her throat and gulping a deep breath every time she needed to speak.AlisonHhttp://spindyeknit.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12707009.post-53710082807621927872016-08-17T21:22:02.143-04:002016-08-17T21:22:02.143-04:00Thank you for writing this Lene, I had no idea how...Thank you for writing this Lene, I had no idea how this worked.
